Asbestos Regulations in 2016

As of the turn of the century, the use, re-use, or sale of asbestos containing materials and product has been prohibited in Ireland. However, as so many materials containing asbestos have already been installed or have been in use prior to the regulations, a lot do still remain in place, and can even until they are at risk of damage or reach the end of their life.

As a result, the danger for exposure to asbestos exists in a variety of places, from businesses to residential buildings. Asbestos regulations in 2016 confront these risks with further legislation and broader education.

The workplace is specifically one area of continuing concern, as incidents are still happening on a regular basis. In one recent incident, employees were exposed to the dangers of asbestos after the owner of a business “failed to have an asbestos survey carried out and as a result was unaware of the presence of Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) within the Excelsior Social Club building.” To avoid these kinds of situations, it is important to implement surveys on any sites potentially at risk of this danger and educate employees within the workforce.

If asbestos containing materials exist in your building, don’t take the risk of exposing asbestos fibres to any occupants. The health risks associated with this dangerous material are some particularly harmful. It is important to be aware of the level of risk and how best to handle the situation.
